From the dawn of time when humans hunted deer, scraped their skins and wore them to keep warm, and drank rainwater from pools there was something else they wanted. Although hunting, warmth, shelter and food were their primary objectives both men and women sought a richness from life that was not confused with these physical needs.
What use could cavemen have for a diamond in the rough or the gleam of gold in an icy stream. Yet somewhere along the timeline this same human learned to cut the sparkle out of the hardest substance and melt those gleaming flakes into delicate golden rings. No survival instinct mothered this invention, our timeless engagement rings were created to satisfy another impulse altogether.
Humans of both sexes often have a need to create that is as passionate as any desire to mate. It may have come along with intelligence, as a way of solving problems to survive, but it too has evolved into a drive all of its own. The emotions we have words for - love, desire, hunger, greed, envy, fear, security, happiness - these we can see and understand the need underlying them. The skills we developed such as woodcraft, stone cutting, basketry, pottery, the spinning and weaving of fibres for clothing, the sowing of seeds and nurturance of food plants - these we can see and understand as practical solutions to issues that threaten the survival of a people.
Yet why did we develop the arts?
People once named and still call God as the Creator and said that man was created in his image. Some philosophers have extended the obvious meaning to mean that our creative nature came from God. In later years when people observe the Church and its use of doctrine to manipulate human beings, they have said that it is humans who are the creators and they created a God in their own image.
Some religions believe that human beings are each a God encapsulating a small universe within our minds. But like the chicken and the egg, within this paradox lies a puzzle that has kept the philosophers among us speculating around campfires to this day without reaching any scientific conclusions that have a prayer of being called facts.
A niche is a hungry market. Imagine being the first person to deliver a product to people who are begging for it! What do you think is going to happen when you are one of the few people selling the product and you have very little competition? You will make big money! What is a niche? It's an opportunity!
