What is an Affiliate?

An affiliate is a partner to a company, this is the easiest definition. Someone a product owner partners with so that each benefits from the association.

Affiliate marketing is a large part of business on the Internet. It is a partnership between merchants opting to have an affiliate program and an affiliate who has a website where they can promote products. For many years now, affiliate marketing has proven to be a cost-efficient, measurable method of delivering long-term results. Every day, people become interested to affiliate marketing and want to learn how to make money with it.  These new affiliates do not fully understand the Internet and rarely make enough money to continue.

It's not Just Selling

One of the common misconceptions about affiliate marketing is about “selling”. Although selling is an important activity for an affiliate they are usually better off doing what is called pre selling. This is the recommendation and provision of information regarding the product. The main task of an affiliate is to advertise this presell information. The importance of advertising in marketing a product is not to be underestimated, advertising is one of the central definitions of marketing.

In affiliate marketing, an affiliate is compensated for every visitor, subscriber and/or customer who clicks through to a merchants site and buys through his efforts. They are paid a commission based on a certain value for each visit. The most attractive aspect of affiliate marketing from the merchant’s viewpoint is that no payment is due until an affiliate gets results.

Affiliate Program Networks or Groups

Affiliate marketing is typically run by affiliate networks composed of two functional bodies, the group affiliates and the group merchants. The affiliate network acts as a third party between the merchant and the associated affiliates. The network provides the technology to deliver the merchant’s promotional material for campaigns and offers. The affiliate network also collects commission fees from the merchant and then pays the affiliates which are part of the program.

Two of the most well known affiliate networks are ClickBank and PayDotCom. Both have products you can sell as an affiliate and offer affiliate management for any program you (or a merchant) would like to open up to affiliates.

A merchant is any web site owner that desires to take advantage of performance based marketing. The benefits to the merchant are many. The merchant can maintain and operate his own affiliate program or work through a network. The merchant gains access to markets and customers without him spending valuable time on this aspect of the business. The merchant decides how much commission he is willing to pay for each sale or lead and when he will pay and how often. Merchandisers often provide regular targeted advertising, information about best-seller items and personal support to their affiliate.

The affiliate or the affiliate marketer also sees a lot of benefits. The affiliate is generally a web site owner with an information site. He promotes one or more merchants and their affiliate programs. Affiliate marketing can generate a full-time income for the affiliate but this is not always an easy task to accomplish.

The affiliate needs to have a good understanding with the merchant as to what the commission will be and the expected payment method and time involved in the contract. He needs to check his stats and improve his campaigns with the use of tracking and analytics. He needs to constantly look for new ways to get traffic and to promote his offers. This isn't easy for a new marketer.

Matching a Product to a Customer via a Niche

The affiliate also has the responsibility to choose their niche market and the merchandise their chosen market would be most interested in. For example, if their site has a user base of mainly stay-at-home mothers, then on-line part time job openings might be a good match for them. This group might also appreciate direct links to children’s products and informational sites.

Affiliate marketing is a great partnership for both the marketer and the affiliate that can be advantageous to both. It is an easy and inexpensive way to start a new business, and you can be up and running within a few days. There is one main thing to consider, and that is how to get traffic and how to make your offer different to all those others. If you can master these aspects, you will succeed.
